June

" I have moments when I am frightened,
as one must be,
reading about the the intolerance
and hate
that sucks men down in a
swampy muck.
There are plenty of things to sicken the heart,
and it is only realistic to face them.
But then I count the other people,
the friendly folk,
and I am comforted,
and I have hope.
When I watch the June dusk
and see the sky glow with the color of moonstone,
and hear a wagon creaking down the shadowy road,
I know how beautiful the earth is.
Someday the sky will be quiet all over the earth,
and the sound of folk going home for supper
will replace the roar of guns."....

Pink

 "I believe in pink.
I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner.
I believe in kissing. Kissing alot.
I believe n being strong
when everything around
seems to be going wrong.
I believe happy girls are the prettiest girls.
I believe tomorrow is another day.
And I believe in miracles."

Cardinals

Their color is so exquisite against the snow.
Shy little babies.
So beautiful and peaceful.
And they travel in pairs.
He and she.
And then they disappear,
until the next dawn.
Happy Tuesday!

Peace

All the little birds.
It's nice to watch them glide in
to feed themselves.
They share.
They sing.
They hide.
They shuffle.
They make peace.
I love them.

Listening

"Perhaps, after all, our best thoughts come
when we are alone.
It is good to listen, not to voices
but to the wind blowing,
 to the brook
 running cool over polished stones,
to the bees drowsy with the weight of pollen.
If we attend to the music of the earth,
we reach serenity.
And then, in some unexplained way,
we share it with others."

Places

THE PLACE I WANT TO GET BACK TO

is where
in the pinewoods
in the moments between
the darkness

and first light
two deer
came walking down the hill
and when they saw me

they said to each other, okay,
this one is okay.
let's see who she is
and why she is sitting

on the ground like that,
so quiet, as if
asleep, or in a dream,
but, anyway, harmless;

and so they came
on their slender legs
and gazed upon me
not unlike the way

I go out to the dunes and look
and look and look
into the faces of the flowers;
and then one of them leaned forward

and nuzzled my hand and what can my life
bring to me that could exceed
that brief moment?
For twenty years

I have gone every day to the same woods,
not waiting, exactly, just lingering.
Such gifts, bestowed
can't be repeated.

If you want to talk about this
come to visit. I live in the house
near the corner, which I have named
Gratitude.

A Sweet New Year

We spent our New Year's Eve in Sugarloaf, Maine.
Brrrr.
Bone-chilling winds, frozen toes, and rosy cheeks.
There was live music, delicious food,
cheers, and beers!
There was beautiful light on the mountain,
and smiling faces in every room.
Champagne, and Rum cha-da.
Lagunitas and Celebration.
Balloons and a crown.
A reindeer!
Tiff and Matt.
Tim, Zack, and Ev.
Casey and Bailey.
Fresh snow blanketed the trails and slopes.
We were enveloped in a snowstorm of Love.
Everyone is back home safely,
embracing the memories
of January at the Loaf.
Thank you again, Kim and Tom.

Stone and Glass

I love stone walls, bright colors,
and antique wood.
Snow blowing and beautiful faces.
Christmas is the perfect season for all of them.

Our Deer

As long as we've lived in Warren County the deer have
been plentiful.
We've had more than our share of "run-ins" with them,
(unfortunately)
We've marveled at their natural beauty.
Their coats and colors change with the seasons.
They sneak up quietly in the early morning
as the sun breaks through,
and then again in the early evening.
Lately though, I've been noticing their social behavior.
I think these photos show their tender communications
with each other.
They stomp their feet, they grind their food,
they trample each other's backs, they sniff each other,
they share common bedding,
they dig through the snow,
and it looks as though they know how to talk
to each other
without saying a word.

They continue to amaze me.
I'm happy they come around and peek into our front door,
and then around to our rear deck,
with a peak into our home.
Their ears perk up and their eyes shine bright.
