A Gem in Newark

Some of you may recognize this
Cathedral from the opening credits
of "The Sopranos".
It was my pleasure to deliver
wedding flowers here.
What a shock it was
to turn the corner,
and discover this magnificent wonder!

The Incredible Athlete

After having just completed the Tour de France,
Lance Armstrong won the Colorado "Leadville 100"
Mountain Bike race this past Saturday!
Incredibly, he knocked 15 minutes off of the old
record which was held for 6 consecutive years by
Dave Wiens, who by the way, beat Lance last year!
Lance rode nearly 60 miles alone, finishing with a
nearly flat tire!
Win or lose, Lance lives strong.
This photo was sent to me by my dear, far-away
friend Cathy. She calls Colorado home.
She was right there to snap this shot of Lance
with his medal.
Thanks so much, Cath-
To A lady who also continues to Live Strong!

A Man of Many Hats

I wasn't quite sure if I should call this post "A Man of Many Hats"
or...."Ahoy Matie"!!
This kid is my younger brother. Tom.
He's a DJ every Thursday morning live from WSCA FM Portsmouth Community Radio.
His show is "A Simple Twist of Folk"
He airs from 6-8 AM.
Set your alarm and give him a listen!
I think you'll be glad you did!

They Know The Way

Known for their massive migrations along the CA-Mexico coast, the Monarch butterfly travels over 3,000 miles.
With an average lifespan of only 6 to 8 months, the butterflies must begin their journey each fall ahead of cold weather, which will kill them if they linger.
They begin life as eggs & hatch as larvae that eat their eggshells, and subsequently the milkweed plants on which they were placed. Monarchs depend exclusively on milkweed.
The larvae become beautifully colored black and orange and white adults. Their colorful pattern makes them easily recognizable and warns predators that the insects are foul tasting and poisonous!

Only monarchs born in late summer or early fall make the migration & they make only one trip. By the time next years migration begins, several summer generations will have lived and died. Yet somehow, the generations know the way and follow the same route their ancestors took-sometimes even returning to the same tree!
Scientists are concerned about the eastern population of the monarchs, which is occurring in smaller numbers, it's survival may be threatened by the reduced acreage of milkweed in their summer home. Protect the milkweed!

I was happy to host this particular monarch this past weekend on our butterfly bush!
Love to all,
Linda
